The 116th Dixie Classic Fair was held from October 2nd through October 11th. Weather was not perfect for the Fair with fog and overcast skies beginning Sunday, October 4th and remaining cloudy and threatening until the rain ended early Friday morning, October 9th. The cloudy and rainy weather caused the attendance to drop to 280,526 from 312,577 in 1997. The number of persons exhibiting items at the Fair in 1998 was the highest ever. This indicates a high level of community support and interest in the Fair programs.
In addition to the amusement rides, kiddieland and carnival midway, fair visitors were treated to a demolition derby, Hypnotist Ken Holloway, concerts by Mark Wills, Rhett Akins, Bill Pinkney & The Original Drifters, a Kid's Show starring Rockin' Scooby Doo & Puzzle Place, All Star Championship Wrestling, Antique Tractor Pulls, and Diamond H World Class Rodeo. Exhibitions and shows were given by Sons of Tennessee, Jerry Ward the chainsaw artist, a hands-on demonstration dairy farm, a barnyard petting zoo, Kuykendall's Border Collies demonstration, Nockair Helicopter Trapeze and of course, racing pigs.
The petting zoo for children and dozens of areas of competition for all kinds of animals from roosters to swine and sheep assured the crowds of being able to see their favorite animals up close. The Fair had a record number of entries for competition for blue ribbons, with more than 70,000 square feet of exhibits that ranged from livestock, baked goods, vegetables, fine arts and flowers.
Yesterday Village continued to grow in popularity. The complex consists of 17 structures that were first built in the 1800's and reconstructed here in the Village. Most buildings have been moved to the Fairgrounds and reassembled exactly as they were when they were first built. Highlights are a one-room church, a general store, a two-story log cabin, and a one-room schoolhouse which held loom demonstrations and our newest two additions, a two story dog-trot style cabin which displays antiques and a cabin moved from Davie County this year which contained demonstrations by Horne Creek Living Farm. The Village Pavilion provided space for special contests competition.
Several turn-of-the-century steam engines were displayed, The Forsyth County Extension Service and Fair volunteers provided demonstrations of early rural life. Blacksmiths gave demonstrations of their fine work throughout the ten-day run of the Fair.
