Dixie Classic Fair 1995 Summary

The 113th run of the Dixie Classic Fair was held in 1995 from September 29th through October 8th. Until two days were washed out almost completely by Hurricane Opal, attendance was running 12,000 people ahead of the record attendance of 321,543 set in 1994.

Even with the lost two days, the Fair was attended by 283,523 people who ate, rode, people watched, browsed exhibits, and enjoyed grandstand events and free entertainment.

In addition to the massive midway and kiddieland rides, Fairgoers were treated to rodeos, a demolition derby, concerts by nationally-known music groups, an antique tractor pull, and a circus. Exhibitions and shows were given by a lumberjack, a chainsaw artist, miniature ponies, a comedy/magic duo, a host of marionettes, and racing pigs.

A petting zoo for children and dozens of areas of competition for all kinds of animals from roosters to swine and sheep assured the crowds of being able to see their favorite animals up close. The Fair also had a record number of entries for competition for blue ribbons, more than 70,000 square feet of exhibits that ranged from fine arts to flowers.

Yesterday Village continued to grow in popularity. The complex consists of 15 structures that were built in the 1800's. Each building has been moved to the Fairgrounds and reassembled exactly as it was when it was first built. Highlights are a one-room church, a general store, a two-story log cabin, and a one-room schoolhouse. Several turn-of-the-century steam engines were displayed, and blacksmiths gave demonstrations throughout the ten-day run of the Fair.
