341,811! A new attendance record was set at the 2003 Dixie Classic Fair which ran October 3rd - 12th. It was the largest attendance in the Fair's history.
On Friday, October 3rd, the Fair opened its gates with one of the most popular special promotion days, Wendy's/107.5 KZL Day at the Fair. Fairgoers are able to ride unlimited rides for $13 with a coupon from a participating Wendy's. This special promotion day is repeated on Monday and Tuesday of the Fair.
Other special promotion days include Preschool - Kindergarten Day, Senior Adults Day, Special Education Day, and Winston-Salem Journal sponsors Family Day at the Fair on the last weekend of the Fair. Free entertainment was offered in a variety of locations on the Fairgrounds. In the Showplace there were four different shows. They included: The Chinese Golden Dragon Acrobats, The Dazzling Mills Family, Hypnotist - Marc Savard, and The Wild West Show by Chris McDaniel. The grandstand entertainment included two Demolition Derbies, Bull riding, and Figure 8 Racing. There were also nationally-known artists Rebecca Lynn Howard, Steve Azar, Rhonda Vincent, Jars of Clay, and Aaron Lines.
Other musical performances were found on the clock tower stage which included Gossip, U.B.U., River Oaks Youth, Summit, John Thompson, Yo-U-Turn, Mission Critical, Sound Express, Cindy Johnson, Bill Lyerly, South Bound, Phase Band, Ladies Auxiliary, Sideline, Centennial Squares and Vision.
There was a variety of other popular attractions found throughout the Fair such as the Kuykendall Border Collies, Circle C Petting Farm, Buford Bear & His Miniature Truck, Hillbilly Bob, BC Characters, Swifty Swine Swimming & Racing Pigs, and the Welde's Big Bear Show.
Yesterday Village was as popular as ever, with Blacksmith Demonstrations, Apple Cider, Apples, Apple Dumplings, Homemade Ice Cream, Tinsmith - Michael Felk, Chainsaw Artist - Jerry Ward, Loom Demonstrations by David Lineback, Decorated Christmas Trees and Wreaths, Antiques in the Museum, Antique Equipment Display, Old Salem Bakery, King's Classic Bakery, Special Food Contests in the Pavilion and all of the restored log structures.
There were also a number of entries for competition for blue ribbons and premiums. There were more than 70,000 square feet of exhibits that ranged from livestock, poultry, baked goods, fine arts and crafts, vegetables and flowers.
