331,605! A new attendance record was set at the 2001 Dixie Classic Fair, which ran September 29th - October 7th. It was the largest attendance in the Fair's history.
Friday, Sept. 29th, the Fair opened its gates promoting Wendy's/107.5 KZL Day, in which Fairgoers were able to ride unlimited rides for $13 with a coupon from a participating Wendy's. This special promotion day was also held on the following Monday and Tuesday.
Other special promotion days included Preschool/Kindergarten Day, Senior Adults Day, Special Education Day, and Winston-Salem Journal sponsored Family Day at the Fair.
Free entertainment was offered in the grandstand, which included two Demolition Derby's, Bull Riding, and Figure 8 Racing. There were also nationally-known artists Ricky Van Shelton, Chris Cagle, Ginny Owens, Mark Lowry, and Joe Diffie.
Other musical performances were found on the clock tower stage including Life In General with Larry Weaver, Vision, Bill Lyerly, Centennial Squares, Letty & Georgia, Brad Alan, The Rocket Band and Mission Critical.
There was a variety of popular attractions throughout the Fair such as Chainsaw Artist - Jerry Ward, Kuykendall Border Collies, Kids Day Circus, Buford Bear & His Miniature Truck, The Robinson Family, Mapapa Acrobats, Madcap Mutts, Bengal Tiger Presentation, Swifty Swine Swimming & Racing Pigs, a Live Shark Show, Health Craft Cooking Show, the Carolina Model Train Exhibit, Alberti Flea Circus, and the Circle C Petting Farm.
Yesterday Village was as popular as ever, with Blacksmith Demonstrations, Apple Cider, Apples, Apple Dumplings, Flue-cured Tobacco, Homemade Ice Cream, Tinsmith-Michael Felk, Bluegrass Music, Horne Creek Living Farm Demonstrations, Antiques in the Museum, Professional Florist, Decorated Christmas Trees and Wreaths, Molasses Mill Demonstration, Antique Equipment Display, and all of the restored log structures.
The 2001 Fair also had a record number of entries for competition for blue ribbons and premiums. There were more than 70,000 square feet of exhibits that ranged from livestock, baked goods, vegetables, fine arts and flowers.
